Hiking and Horseback

Hike Away Into History
The Princeton area was opened by explorers, fur traders, miners and later by the Kettle Valley Railway. Many of these trails were built along routes first used by Native Canadians. Many of the Heritage Trails can still be hiked or ridden on horseback.
Hudson's Bay Company Fur Brigade Trail and Heritage Trails
Follow the footsteps of the explorers along the original Hudson’s Bay Company Fur Brigade Trail between Hope, BC and Princeton. The original fur trader campsites can still be found (25-40 kilometres apart). Other Heritage Trails include the Whatcom gold rush trail (1858) and the Dewdney Trail (1860). Visitors may explore half-a-dozen mining ghost towns (a self-guided DVD tour is available. Call 250-295-4149).
The Heritage Trails lead to the back country of the Western Coast (Cascade) Mountains. Multi-day and one-day hikes can be taken from your basecamp in Princeton.
Day Hikes
Swan Lake Conservation Area offers six kilometres (four miles) of trails, just minutes from Princeton. A bird sanctuary; visitors may view many species from behind blinds at the East end of the lake. There is a map of the Swan Lake Conservation Area trails in PDF format.

The Kettle Valley Railtrail and China Ridge Trails (see biking) may be hiked or ridden on horseback. There are many other day-hikes in the vicinity of Princeton and guides to them are available at the Princeton and District Visitor Centre.
